How to Set Intentions Instead of Resolutions
Swap Resolutions for Intentions
Have you ever noticed that a New Year’s resolution never really sticks? Well, it might be time to switch things up. Let’s try setting intentions instead.
What’s the Difference?
A resolution is something you wish to accomplish. But an intention? That’s what you want to embody in your life. It’s more about the journey and the practice. For example, instead of setting a resolution to work out more, set an intention to honor your body through movement every day.
How to Set an Intention
Setting intentions isn’t complicated. Here’s how:
1. Start with what matters: What do you want to feel, be or have in your life?
2. Keep it positive: Frame your intention in a positive light, such as “I want to honor my body,” rather than “I don’t want to neglect my body.”
3. Make it present: State your intention as if you’re already living it. For instance, say “I am showing up for myself” instead of “I will show up for myself.”
Intention for Fitness
For fitness, the same rule applies. Instead of making a resolution to lose 10 pounds, set an intention to lead a healthier lifestyle. This will naturally guide you to feed your body better, engage in more physical activities and ultimately, to lose weight if necessary.
Turn Intentions into Actions
To make this work, take it a step further. After setting your intention, find ways to incorporate it into your everyday life.
Want to honor your body? Schedule regular workouts, choose healthy foods, and get enough sleep.
Wish to be more present? Practice mindfulness throughout the day, not just when you’re working out.
Remember, it’s the journey, not the destination. It’s all about how you live your life and health journey, day by day, moment by moment.
