Simplifying Eating Healthy in 6 Steps!

Hey Unbeaten Family! Coach Logan here! Eating a healthy diet seems daunting to most. Nowadays, there is a plethora of information available to us and it can be hard to know what is accurate or not. I’m here to ease some of that confusion and get down to the basics of how to eat a healthy balanced diet. In this blog you will find seven tips and rules of thumb to follow when starting your healthy eating journey.

  1. Balance: it is important to consider the variety of food you have in your diet. Ensure you are getting plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and protein. You should try to incorporate foods from each of these categories in every meal.
  2. Moderation: Like anything in life, moderation is important. Moderation is just as important, if not more important, than balance. Even if you are just eating lean meat, fruits and vegetables, the quantity is a necessary key to your health. And if you’re like me and just want to look at the serving size, that is not going to be as effective as tracking your food in an app (I use Cronometer) to get a holistic view of what you are eating.
  3. Limit processed foods: processed foods are the demise of our world when it comes to eating healthily, it is just so much easier to grab something on the go than to craft something from scratch. It is also sometimes even CHEAPER too! Hard to beat, but when it comes to your health, all the preservatives in the food are not only slowing down the degradation of the food in the package, they are also slowing down your bodily functions. We need to encourage putting the bag of chips down, and making a ham sandwich instead.
  4. Hydration: When we went through the 21 day tough challenge in December, a lot of people found it most difficult to get their gallon of water down everyday. BUT those that did, found that it was so much easier to eat in moderation because their stomachs were full of water.
  5. Consistency: Next up is something that may be the hardest of all. It is not THAT hard to do these things for a week, maybe even two, but these changes are not a plan for a diet. For these steps to be REALLY beneficial, you have to look at it as a lifestyle change. There will be good weeks, and really bad weeks, but as a family, we have to encourage consistency and cheer each other on through the good and the bad.
  6. Consult a professional at UF: If you are reading this blog post as a member, you know where this is going, strategy sessions. Cassie and Brandi are here for your success coordination. Schedule a time to sit down for just a few minutes before or after a session and figure out the best way for you to achieve what I am talking about above.
