Foam Rolling 101 for Sore Muscles
What is Foam Rolling?
Foam rolling, also known as self-myofascial release (SMR), is a fancy way to say self-massage. Sometimes our muscles get all knotted up, just like how your headphones get tangled in your pocket. Yeah, those knots are not fun, are they? Foam rolling is like detangling those knots but in your muscles.
Why You Should Try Foam Rolling?
Imagine you’ve had a long day working or exercising. Your muscles feel all tired and sore. Ouch! But what if you could do something that would ease the soreness and make you feel warmed up and fresh? That’s precisely what foam rolling does.
It helps release muscle tightness, soreness, and inflammation. It also increases your joint range of motion. Think about it as a quick trip to the massage therapist. Sounds awesome, right?
How To Start Foam Rolling
Now that you’re all excited about it, let’s get you started. You will need a foam roller. If you’re a beginner, go for a softer foam. Once your muscles get used to it, you can go for firmer foams.
The process is simple:
1. Lay your sore muscle group on the foam roller. Let’s say your thighs are sore.
2. Gently roll your body back and forth over the roller. Yes, just like rolling dough in the kitchen.
3. Any time you find a painful spot, show it some love and spend more time there. Don’t forget to breathe!
Foam Rolling: Do’s and Don’ts
Do foam roll both before and after a workout. It’s a great warm-up and cool-down method that aids recovery.
Don’t roll directly on a joint or bone. Ouch! That hurts! A foam roller is meant for your muscles and not your bones.
And last but not least, don’t roll your lower back. This area is sensitive and should not be subjected to the same pressures as your thighs, for example. Hard pressure on your lower back could lead to injury. We don’t want that.
