How to Build a Balanced Weekly Workout Plan

Achieving Balance in Your Workout Plan

Fitness isn’t a race, it’s a life-long journey. And like any journey, it’s best when you’re prepared with a plan. Today we’re breaking down the basics of creating a balanced weekly workout plan that not just supports your fitness goals, but nurtures your overall health and well-being.

Start With Your Fitness Goals

First, think about your goals. Are you looking to lose weight? Gain muscle? Improve your cardio? Your goals will influence the components of your workout plan, so having clarity on these is the first step towards creating a plan that suits your needs.

Create a Workout Schedule

Once you’ve defined your fitness goals, it’s time to create a schedule. A balanced workout plan often includes cardio training, strength training, flexibility exercises and rest days. Here’s a simple breakdown:

Cardio Training: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of high-intensity cardio exercise each week. Break these up over 3 to 5 days, depending on your schedule.

Strength Training: A good rule of thumb is two days of strength training per week, focusing on major muscle groups. Make sure to not exercise the same muscle groups two days in a row.

Flexibility Exercises: Incorporate stretching exercises into your routine to improve flexibility and enhance your training performance.

Rest Days: Rest days are crucial for recovery. Give your body time to heal and restore energy by scheduling 1 to 2 rest days per week.

Keep Variety in Your Workouts

Include a variety of exercises in your plan to keep things exciting and avoid hitting a fitness plateau. Mix up your cardio exercises with running, swimming or cycling. Vary your strength training routines with free weights, resistance bands or body weight exercises.

Stay Consistent

Consistency is key in fitness. It doesn’t matter how intense your workouts are if you’re not being consistent. Aim to stick to your workout schedule as closely as you can. Remember, all progress is good progress–even if it’s slower than you’d like.
